6 PIECES OF INFORMATION TO GATHER AT THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT

When you get into an accident with another driver, the commotion of the crash can be disturbing, and it may be difficult to remember to gather important information. Most drivers will remember to ask for things like the other driver’s name and insurance information, but there are other things that will be helpful to gather at the scene of the accident that may not be at the top of your mind.

  1. Driver’s information
You will want to make sure you get the other driver’s contact information as well as their insurance information. This will help you if you need to contact the driver again once you leave the scene, or getting in contact with their insurance.
    • Name
    • Phone number
    • Address
    • Driver’s license photo
    • Insurance company card photo
  2. Vehicle description
Having written down a description, or taken a picture, of their vehicle may be information that you need later on. More information is better than less in situations like these.
  3. Photos
Having pictures of the damage to/ state of both vehicles can help determine liability after the crash. If the other driver’s car does not have a scratch and yours is totaled, having images of the damage may help you gain compensation from insurance.
  4. Witness information
Having a third party that is willing to detail the happenings of the crash can be really helpful to any claims that are filed, or lawsuits if it goes that far. If anyone was a witness to the crash, gather their name, address, and phone number.
  5. Personal record of the crash
As mentioned above, you are likely in a frazzled state of mind right after a crash. Trying to remember specific details after the accident can be difficult, which is why it is important to write down or voice record your own personal record of how the crash occurred.
  6. Police report
Having a police officer arrive at the scene, even if it is a minor accident, can be beneficial. You may ask them for any information you were not able to gather yourself and they will likely file a police report. This report can aid in determining liability for the accident.
