WHAT TO DO ABOUT TRANSPORTATION WHILE YOUR CAR IS BEING REPAIRED

After you get injured in a wreck caused by another negligent driver, you may wonder how you will manage in the days and weeks following the impact. After all, your car may have taken an even harder hit than you did.

If it is repairable at all, it may take a mechanic and/or body shop an extended period of time to get your vehicle repaired, restored, re-painted and back on the road again. What will you drive in the meantime?

The liable party can pay for a rental

The good news is that when there is evidence of clear liability in an accident, the at-fault driver’s insurance provider can cover the cost of a rental vehicle until the other driver’s car is repaired. If liability is disputed, the other driver’s insurance company may not be so willing to help.

In those cases, drivers who carried rental reimbursement coverage at the time of the accident may need to turn to their own insurance carriers for transportation expenses. However, if such is the case, it’s vital to save all receipts for public transit and rental car fees to add to the claim for damages that you later file.

What if I don’t have that coverage?

All is not lost if you don’t specifically have rental reimbursement or transportation expense coverage on your policy. You can still pay out-of-pocket for a rental and submit a claim to the insurance company that includes all of your transportation expenses.

Should they quibble about paying for your rental car costs, you may want to retain a Stamford personal injury attorney to fight for your right to compensation.

What does rental reimbursement usually cover?

You should be able to recover all costs associated with renting another vehicle while yours is being repaired after an accident. Alternatively, after an accident, you may be unable (or prefer not) to drive and instead seek reimbursement for funds spent on public transit fares, Uber, Lyft or other transportation costs.

In many cases, those who carry collision coverage and get into wrecks with other motorists will already have rental reimbursement coverage rolled right into their policy. Others may opt to include a rider or extend their coverage to make sure they are never stuck without a vehicle after an accident.

Fight for your right to fair compensation

Injured victims and those with only property damages should understand that insurance companies want to get away with paying the lowest amount possible on each claim. The adjusters can nickel and dime you into acquiescing into accepting a much lower settlement than your injuries and damages are actually worth.

Fighting for civil justice can include filing a personal injury lawsuit against the liable party’s insurance carrier.
