SAVING MONEY ON YOUR DIVORCE

Divorce can be unpleasant in a variety of ways, but many Americans do not pay attention to how expensive divorce itself can be. Of course, people are aware of the expenses associated with child support and alimony, but the actual legal process of divorce itself can cost thousands of dollars.

Fortunately, there are some ways that you can make divorce more affordable. According to Forbes Magazine, choosing a collaborative method of divorce and ensuring that you communicate with your lawyer effectively saves a lot of money.

What is collaborative divorce?

The two major varieties of divorce are collaborative divorce and trial divorce. There are many ways to approach a collaborative divorce, but the most common is for each party to have their own lawyer. Then, everybody will discuss the terms of the divorce over a conference table rather than at trial.

Collaborative divorce tends to be much faster, and thus is naturally cheaper than trial divorce. Plus, choosing a collaborative divorce means that you are involving fewer legal professionals in the process. This makes it less expensive.

How can I effectively communicate with my lawyer?

Lawyers spend thousands of billable hours per year getting their clients’ financial records organized, as divorce largely centers on the financials. Coming to your lawyer with clear records will save money and time.

Another great way to save money is to try and limit communication to email as much as possible. Of course, there are some things better discussed over the phone with a trusted attorney, but time is money. In the majority of instances it will take your lawyer less time to respond to an email as compared to have a phone conversation.
